Education has always been a priority in the state of Jharkhand. Some of the reputed seats of learning like Indian School of Mines and Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, Ranchi can be found in this state. The literacy rate in Jharkhand is 67.63%, the male literacy rate being 78.45% and that of female being 56.21% (according to Census 2011).
The state of Jharkhand has formed the Jharkhand Academic Council and Jharkhand Education Project Council to promote and foster higher education in the state. Jharkhand was earlier a part of Bihar. It assumed the status of a separate state in the year 2000 and is known as Jharkhand since then. It is India’s 28th state.
Higher education in Jharkhand focus on various subjects such as agriculture, horticulture, law, medical, technology, Vedic, veterinary ayurvedic, homeopathy, hotel management, etc. The state hosts some of major institutes of the country like IIT ISM Dhanbad, NIT Jamshedpur, IIIT Ranchi, IIM Ranchi, etc. The universities and institutes such as Kolhan University, National University of Study and Research in Law Ranchi, Birsa Agricultural University, Central University of Jharkhand plays a major role in attracting students from all around the globe.
